Commercial GreenhouseIndianapolis residents have something to celebrate in the near future. Soon, Indy will be home to a new 100,000 square foot greenhouse built by BrightFarms Inc. The hydroponic greenhouse featuring state-of-the-art technology will be built with help from the Westside Community Development Corp. (WCDC) and Marsh Supermarkets.

Nearly 1 million pounds of fresh, local produce will come from the farm annually. Foods grown will include tomatoes, herbs, and lettuces. It is expected that this project will bolster the redevelopment of the Near West neighborhood with a stronger local economy and vastly increased food production capabilities.

The initiative, led by WCDC, is another piece of the redevelopment of the Michigan Street Corridor. The goal of promoting commercial revitalization in the neighborhood is welcome by area residents. BrightFarms is one of five new businesses to locate to this section of Near West Indianapolis. With nearly 5-acres of land on which to build the farm, expectations are high. The lot has been vacant since 1996.

The goal for BrightFarms is to build greenhouses as close to supermarkets as possible, allowing for a bountiful supply of fresh, healthy, local produce on a year-round basis. The company is dedicated to improving the health of the planet by growing sustainably and to the health of society by increasing access to fresh produce. LED grow lights can be used in such large installations to improve crop quality and yield while keeping costs low.

Marsh Supermarkets, which operates 97 Supermarkets throughout Indiana and Ohio, will be the exclusive retail partner for the Indianapolis greenhouse. The 100,000 square foot greenhouse, slated to be completed in 2014, will create up to 25 green collar jobs and grow millions of pounds of produce that conserves natural resources and is thousands of miles fresher for Marsh customers and local community organizations.
